How does chiropractic help with ear infections
Parents ask me on a regular basis, "Can chiropractic help with ear infections?" My answer is always,"Yes it sure can!" Now does this mean that chiropractic can get rid of all ear infections? No, there are no absolutes when it comes to healing, however in my office I have had an extremely high success rate.
To explain how chiropractic can help we must first take a look at what causes ear infections and the anatomy of the ear. On the diagram to the right, the middle ear is where the ear infections occur. To the right of that you will see the eustachian tube which drains the fluid from the middle ear. Now that we understand the anatomy of the ear lets go a little further.
The nerve roots that leave the first four cervical vertebrae go to the superior ganglia which acts like a computer hub and sends nerves to various organs and vessels. One of these is the eustachian tube. Subluxations (misalignments) in the vertebra in the neck can cause dysfunction in the these nerves. This dysfunction can cause the muscles around the eustachain tube to spasm closing the tube. This blockage causes fluid to build up in the inner (middle) ear. This build up of fluid acts like a stagnant pond. Similar to a stagnant pond attracting mosquitoes this fluid is the perfect breeding ground for viruses and bacteria, the start of an ear infection. Studies have shown that antibiotics at best stop an ear infection 14 percent faster than doing nothing, no better if it's a virus. In fact they've proven so ineffective that the AMA has recommended to MD's that they should not prescribed antibiotics for ear infections. Studies have also shown that ear infections treated with antibiotics are 4 times more likely to reoccur. "SO WHAT DO I DO?"
As a Chiropractor our goal is to remove the interference to the nervous system allowing the body to take care of itself. To do this a gentle force is applied to the area of misalignment removing the interference. This stops the aberrant signal to the Eustachian tube allowing the muscle to relax and the fluid to drain naturally. When a nervous system is free if interference the body can function as it was designed to function.
